How Nonprofits Form the Identity of Milwaukee

Milwaukee Film festival and Black Lens
Milwaukee Film is not only a film festival for entertainment in Milwaukee, but also a central pathway for building community and enriching lives. The film festival allows Milwaukee's artists and creative roots to shine through, as well as giving opportunity and voice to those who haven't been given the chance throughout history. Milwaukee Film kindles a unique film-making community that reaches beyond Milwaukee to a broad audience of all types of people. In the future, the organization hopes to establish itself in the world as a global center for film culture, permanently shaping the identity of Milwaukee. Jonathan Jackson, CEO of Milwaukee Film, speaks about the nonprofit as a whole and its goal to overtake Milwaukee Film culture.
In addition to bringing film culture and community to Milwaukee, Milwaukee Film also has a separate focus to bring a voice and platform for POC communities and filmmakers. Black Lens specifically focuses on producing films made by and featuring black individuals from Milwaukee. Mikey Murry speaks specifically about this sector of Milwaukee film and how this nonprofit has shaped the film making culture in Milwaukee. Dr. Donte McFadden, professor at Marquette University and Co Founder of Black Lens, also spoke on the importance of community through film-making and how Black Lens has implicated that.
